Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles. St. Lucia was named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse by the French, the first European colonizers.

St. Lucia is an island state located in the Caribbean Sea. The island was formed as the result of volcanic activity and is just 27 miles long and 14 miles across at the point of maximum width. Orchids and several other exotic plants grow wild in the lush rainforests of this island country. In recent years, St. Lucia has mainly been engaged in the export of bananas, clothing, vegetables, cacao and coconuts.
St. Lucia’s physical features are strikingly beautiful. Dominated by high peaks and rain forests in the interior, the 616-square-kilometer (238-square-mile) island is known for the twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton on the southwestern coast, its soft sandy beaches, and its magnificent natural harbors. Mount Gimie, the highest peak, is located in the central mountain range and rises to 958 meters (3,143 ft) above sea level.
